Check the small things.
Leather often hides in the details: bags, belts, wallets, patches, zipper pulls, watch straps, key rings, trim, and the small pieces product photos skip.
Accessories are easy to miss.
A coat may be easy to check because the tag is obvious. Accessories hide more details. A cotton tote can have a leather patch. A canvas belt can have a leather keeper. A wallet can be synthetic outside and leather inside. A shoe can be animal-free on top and still have a leather lining.
Do not ignore leather because the item is small. Small leather details are still leather, and they are often avoidable once you start looking for them.
Animal-free versions are not hard to find.
Cork, canvas, recycled nylon, cactus, apple, rubber, webbing, raffia, and better synthetic materials can all work well for bags and small goods. The best alternatives do not need to imitate leather perfectly. They need to hold shape, age decently, feel good in the hand, and survive daily use.
Hardware matters too. A vegan bag with weak stitching, flimsy buckles, rough edges, or a strap that twists is still a bad buy.

Outer material
Check the main material first: leather, suede, nubuck, shearling, exotic skins, and leather-look synthetics can look similar in photos.
Hidden leather
Look for patches, zipper pulls, strap tabs, handle wraps, logo labels, belt keepers, watch straps, key fobs, and reinforcement pieces.

Hardware and construction
Check buckles, clasps, stitching, strap attachment, edge finish, weight, and whether the item looks built for daily use.
Care and aging
A useful accessory should have basic care instructions. If the surface will peel quickly or cannot be cleaned, it may not be worth buying for how it looks on day one.
Look closer
Small pieces still count.
Bags, belts, wallets, straps, and patches can include leather. A better alternative is animal-free and sturdy in the hand.
