Handle the food gaps between places.

Travel meals fail in the in-between: airport terminals, late arrivals, highway exits, delayed flights, hotel rooms, trains, ferries, and the hour when everything nearby is closed.

Transit is where plans get thin.

Flights, airports, road trips, trains, buses, late arrivals, and hotel check-ins are where vegan food often gets boring or disappears. This is not a moral problem. It is a logistics problem.

Assume the planned meal might fail. The airline special meal may not appear. The airport option may close. The road stop may have fries and nothing else. The hotel restaurant may stop serving before you arrive.

A backup keeps you steady. It lets you be flexible, patient, and social instead of making hunger the loudest problem in the car.

Before the trip, use tools like VeggL’s airport cheat sheets and HappyCow to spot airport, road, and arrival-day options. Treat them as scouting tools, not promises: terminals change, hours shift, and menus are not always current.

The transit food plan.

Use this before the part of the trip where nobody wants to solve dinner.

Flights

Request the special meal if available, then pack as if it may not arrive.

Airports

Check current terminal options, but do not assume they will be open, close, or well-stocked.

Road trips

Pack a real backup: sandwich, nuts, bars, fruit, crackers, hummus pack, shelf-stable meal, or whatever keeps you steady.

Train and bus days

Bring food that survives delays and does not require perfect timing.

Late arrival

Know the hotel-area grocery, delivery, or simple shelf-stable dinner before you land.

A boring snack can save the day.

The best travel backup does not need to be a feast. It is the thing that keeps you from becoming desperate before the good meal happens.
