Check

Check whether something is vegan without guessing.

Use this when you need to know whether a food, product, material, menu item, or claim is vegan. Labels, logos, ingredients, menus, materials, and claims are easier to handle when you check them in the same order each time.

Use the methodIngredient glossary

Start with the category.

A vegan check is a sequence. First decide what kind of thing you are checking: food, personal care, clothing, household goods, a menu item, or a material. Then choose the source that can answer that category best.

Front-of-pack language can help, but it can also mislead. Plant-based, dairy-free, cruelty-free, natural, sustainable, and clean do not all answer the same question. Treat each claim as narrow until it proves otherwise.

You do not need to memorize every ingredient. Get fast at sorting products into four groups: clearly vegan, clearly not vegan, worth verifying, or unclear enough to skip.

Start with the question type.

Food, claims, ingredients, labels, and materials each need a different check.

Method

Use the thirty-second check when you need a quick, repeatable process.

Ingredients

Use the glossary when a back-of-pack word looks suspicious or opaque.

Labels and logos

Use the marks page when the package has a certification, claim, or symbol you do not fully trust.

Worth verifying

If the product matters, check the current source: label, product page, brand answer, menu, or certifier.

Worth skipping

If the answer is unclear and the purchase is not important, choose a simpler confirmed alternative.

Look closer

Unclear is an answer too.

Not every product needs research. If the answer is unclear and the purchase is not important, choose a simpler confirmed alternative.
