Gather
Keep meals calm without shrinking yourself.
You do not need the perfect answer for every comment. Decide when to answer, when to set a boundary, when to make a joke, and when to keep eating.

Stay calm and clear.
Often the best move is simple: be easy to include, bring good food when it helps, and do not turn every meal into a lesson.
That does not mean apologizing for yourself. It means making the social moment easier when you can, setting a boundary when you need to, and not treating every comment as something you have to answer.
A short answer can be stronger than a perfect answer. You do not have to win the table. The goal is to live your life without letting every meal become a cross-examination.
Dating gives you information.
Mention it early enough that it is not a surprise, but keep it normal. If it matters deeply to you, that matters. If you are flexible about dating non-vegans, say so with ordinary confidence.
Watch the response. Curiosity, generosity, and ordinary respect tell you one thing. Eye-rolling, interrogation, or making your food into a joke tells you another.
Cooking one genuinely good meal often tells someone more than a serious speech about values.
Keep a few short answers ready.
Try: “I am happy to bring something.” “I am vegan, but I am easy to feed if we pick somewhere with a real option.” “I am happy to talk about this later, but I do not want to debate it over dinner.”
Private conversations usually work better than table debates. A relative who might listen in the kitchen may perform for the room at dinner.
A plan for comments, questions, and boundaries.
Use this when the conversation matters, or when it is not worth turning into a thing.
Common comments
Protein, desert-island questions, plants feel pain, bacon jokes, family traditions. Keep one short answer ready and move on.
Family
Offer to bring a dish, help with the menu, host sometimes, and pick the few conversations worth having privately.
Dating
Mention it naturally, decide what is a dealbreaker, and watch whether the person is curious, dismissive, generous, or weird about it.
Boundaries
Say: “I am happy to talk about this later, but I do not want to debate it over dinner.”
Silence
A funeral, hard family event, first work lunch, tense holiday, or bad day may not be the moment. You can just eat your food.

Look closer
Sometimes the best answer is short.
A short answer, a good dish, or a clear boundary can do more than a long explanation to someone who was never listening.
